Randy vs. Photobucket

Prepare to clutch those pearls -- I've been censored. I posted some of my old student life-drawings on Photobucket only to discover that three of them had been deleted for TOS violations. Another was deleted the following day.

(The remainder may be found in my Scrapbook under My Artwork => Life Drawings.)

While you all fetch your smelling salts and attempt to recover, allow me to rant. I noticed that the deleted images seemed to be the frontal ones, while the rear views remained (at least for the nonce). I complained about it to Ignoble Bard, who egged me into writing Photobucket Support for a clarification of what was and wasn't inappropriate.

Here is what I wrote:

May I have some clarification on your terms of service/prohibited content
concerning 'nudity'? I posted several photos of my old student artwork for my
friends to see. About eight of them were life drawings -- no detail, no
genitalia, basic line drawings. Four of them were deleted, three yesterday, one
today. Do you have people who judge content or was this some kind of bot?

Should I remove the rest of the drawings before I get into trouble? I didn't
consider line drawings to be 'nudity'.

And here is what I got back from them:

Your account contained images which violate our Terms of Use. These Terms apply to all users regardless of the Public/Private setting of the account. When you created the account, you agreed to abide by these terms and we clearly explained the consequences of violating those terms.

Photobucket.com attempts to maintain a website that is absent of offensive, indecent or objectionable content. That is our general policy and your images were removed in accordance with that policy. The Photobucket.com Terms of Use, found at http://www.photobucket.com/terms, reflect that policy by giving Photobucket the right to remove content that, among other things, (a) it deems unlawful, obscene, harmful, threatening, defamatory, or hateful; (b) invades the privacy of any third party; (c) contains nudity, illustrated nudity, pornography, illustrated pornography, child erotica, or child pornography; or (d) Photobucket deems otherwise objectionable.

Your Photobucket Support Team

All well and good, except they didn't answer my question about who makes the judgments (human or bot) or whether I should remove the remainder of the drawings, which were just as nude as the deleted ones. As for 'clear' explanations, the link provided lists, under 8.Content/Activity Prohibited:

8.4 contains nudity, excessive violence, or offensive subject matter or contains a link to an adult website;

Note, nothing is said about illustrated nudity that could be considered 'art' rather than 'porn'. I'm no Picasso, but there can be found on the net, on respectable sites, line drawings by him that are racier than anything I had posted. (In fact, I seem to recall one with a minotaur -- but I digress. LOL) All I wanted was an answer to my question, not another canned lecture.

The upshot is that I'm miffed with Photobucket. This means I'm shifting all my fandom related graphics to my Live Journal scrapbooks and taking my photographs to another image hosting site. For now, I'll have my art-related things here at my Scrapbook, but I'm considering a DeviantArt account.

Lovely picture, though!

Yes -- you can almost . . . *gasp* see a nipple!

Some of the others, i guess I could understand, but this one? You saw more behind Sally Rand's fan.

OMG! I just can't believe it. What a bunch of morons.

The other deleted ones show breasts, but no worse than you'd see on the Venus de Milo. I just deleted the entire album before they could get upset about the butts. And thank goodness, I hadn't gotten around to putting up any of the male nudes.

Nice drawing by the way. Wow! I'm impressed.

Yes, I was cleaning out my portfolio recently and was surprised at how well I could draw, back in the day. I just had to show someone. LOL

One nipple? That's it? I want my money back. I've seen more skin in church. Those nuns!

Tell you what, dude, for an extra honorarium, gentlemen of the world may be granted entrance to http://pics.livejournal.com/randy_o/gallery/00003w9k, where more titillating T&A can be viewed.

I really hate photobucket. If I didn't have so much linked there that it would be a nightmare to move, I'd put it all here. They have yet to explain what constitutes 'nudity' and it seems that a lot of female body showing is allowed but male butt is not, I just don't get it. Deviant art is good.

This time it was female bodies that got me into trouble -- mostly titties. I hadn't even uploaded any of the male nudes yet.

They left the cheeky butt views, and those were just as 'nude' as the frontal poses.

I'm a little intimidated by all the good artists on DeviantArt.

Don't be! I felt like that too and I still get envious at what others can do with their tools of the trade - but I decided to not let it get to me and only let it make me strive for further improvements. And btw. there are a few very nifty groups who provide a lot of support for amateur/unknown artists, such as constructive critiques, tutorials, competetions etc.

Oh for Pete's sake...! Amazing drawings by the way.

Photobucket gives me the pip. I've given up even trying to post anything that might be construed as nudity, excessive violence, or offensive subject matter. and use Weblog Images

They say Worried about censorship?
Don't, no account will be closed due to any content barrier.

I don't even have anything really raunchy on there. :\ they were just deemed too porny for Photobucket

Thank you for the link. I've been researching other image hosting sites, especially since I discovered last night that Live Journal doesn't allow direct linking from the scrapbooks. Any story art for HASA and avatars for message boards will have to be stored somewhere other than here.

I haven't checked any out yet. I like the look of Photobucket, other than they are dicks. We'll see if pragmatism wins out over principle. LOL

Photobucket is the easiest to use I think, but they are not consistent in what they allow. I have an image which is actually a *mirror* image, so it looks like two guys cheek-to-cheek, although it's not, and that got removed. O_O. I have so many images stored that I got worried about them deleting my account entirely and although on my webpage I can upload directly from the hard drive, I think if the HD implodes, they would vanish, so I use Weblog for a very few, although I'm sure there are others. These are your own pictures, though, so I think Deviant Art is a good idea.

So I guess two gay people better not try posting their wedding pics? See, that was my question -- who or what decides what is offensive and on what basis?

LOL -- thank goodness they haven't looked closely at the picture of the pony where he is exhibiting five limbs. I thought it was cute, but I guess I'm courting getting my account suspended for animal exhibitionism.

All things considered, DeviantART is probably the best place to archive all my old student work. And anything I might produce in the future, which is highly unlikely, but you never know.

Oh please, come to deviantART! I'd love to add you there to my friendslist in an instant! =D

Here ya go -- http://erynlasgalen1949.deviantart.com/

I just signed up today and have begun uploading slowly.

And btw. these drawing are pretty! I can not see why PB would have a reason to delete them. Btw. the TOS of Photobucket are edgy at best.

Btw. the TOS of Photobucket are edgy at best.

It was the answer to my polite question that ticked me off the most. I merely wanted to know where they draw the line so I can avoid crossing it in the future. I wasn't even complaining about the deletions -- just looking for clarification. Instead I get this, "We clearly told you when you signed up . . ."

Bottom line, their TOS says nothing about illustrated nudity, so they can't claim to be clear about anything. Almost all the 'photo' sites forbid 'nudity', so I am now extremely gun-shy. Perhaps I will give DeviantART a try.

I've had pics censored on Photobucket too for no good reason. One was a scene from the recent Beowulf movie of Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mom arising from the water. There were no nipples or anything, rather it looked like she was wearing a wet suit. I mean really, wtf? I've been told weblogimages.com is a good place where they don't censor you.

Btw, nice art. I didn't know you drew too. Very cool.
Aug. 21st, 2010 04:27 pm (UTC)
I used to draw. I used to paint in oils, watercolors, and acrylics. I used to do etchings and woodcuts. More recently, I worked in stained glass.

Now I write and clean cat boxes. LOL

They might have deleted Angelina for copyright reasons. This whole thing has me jumpy. I had to post warnings on my nudes at DeviantART, which means that non-members can't see them. This is beyond frustrating.
Aug. 27th, 2010 08:03 pm (UTC)
If it was due to copyright reasons, that's not what they said. I suspect they employ some kind of bot to scan through people's images and the image must have resembled nudity enough that the bot's little antennae went f*ckablooey. Oh well, I guess we have to protect all the sensitive souls out there, even though my photobucket account is locked down so that theoretically only I can be corrupted by the images I put up there.
I hope you aren't writing and cleaning the cat boxes at the same time.
Aug. 28th, 2010 05:22 pm (UTC)
So it was for nudity. The thing that puzzled me the most is that only three of my images were deleted the first day, with one more being censored on the second. I suspected a bot, because a human person would have removed everything at once, including the buttocks and side shots, which were just as much 'nudity' as the others.

That's why I wrote them asking for clarification -- why some and not others? How do I avoid setting off their bots? As you can see, they were next to useless.

LOL -- I do go over stories in my mind while I do chores, but otherwise, no. I don't have four hands.
