Post Holiday Depression -- A Song of Aman

I don't know what my problem is.  I get this way around Solstice-time.  To cheer myself up, I wrote this little filk, my first.

Disclamer:  I own even less than usual.  Lyrics belong to the Eagles, from their song Hotel California.  The land of Valinorë and the names of the Ainur belong to JRR Tolkien.  The spin is my own.

The Land of Valinorë

On the dark Sundering ocean,
Cool wind in my hair
Sweet scent of incense,
Blowing in on the air.
Up ahead in the darkness,
I saw a shimmering light.
My heart was heavy and my eyes were dim,
But what a lovely sight!

The Lady stood on the quayside,
I heard the sound of bells
And I was thinking to myself,
This is heaven . . . or is it hell?
Then she lit up a lantern
And she showed me the way.
There were voices from fair Tirion
And I heard them say

Welcome to the land of Valinorë
Such a lovely place,
Such a lovely face!
Plenty of room in the land of Valinorë
At the End of Years
You will find us here.

Her mind is Feanor-twisted
She has the Silmaril.
Docile hosts of sweet Vanyar
To do her will.
How they dance on the greensward!
They sing their songs yet.
Elves, they sing to remember,
And they dance to forget.

So I called out to Yavanna
And said please bring me some wine.
She said, we haven't had that vintage here since 3029.
And still the Vanyar keep singing from far, far away.
Wake me up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say . . .

Welcome to the Realm of Valinorë
Such a timeless place
Such a changeless face.
Immortal life in the land of Valinorë
What a nice surprise
No one ever dies.

Star-domes on the ceilings
They have Miruvor on ice.
She said, we are all just prisoners here,
Of our own device.
In Manwë's Chambers
The Ainur gather for the feast.
They stab it with their mithril knives
But they cannot kill the beast.

The last thing I remember
I was running for the shore.
I had to find the Straight Road back
To the place I was before.
Daro, said Mandos,
We're commanded to receive.
You can join me any time you like,
But you can never leave.

Oh, welcome, to the Realm of Valinorë
Such a lovely place,
Of unchanging grace.
Plenty of room on the land of Valinorë.
At the End of Years
I will still be here.

Depressing indeed!
Oh, dear! What a greatly done adaption, and I fear, a very fitting, too! This is a depressing view at the Blessed Realm, but also frighteningly accurate,at least for an Elf who had lived in Middle Earth. I liked this line:

Welcome to the Realm of Valinorë
Such a timeless place
Such a changeless face.
Immortal life in the land of Valinorë
What a nice surprise
No one ever dies.

Nice surprise, indeed! The last stanza with the attempt to leave again was very fitting, too, and also quite chilling.

Great adaption of this song! But I do hope your spirits have lifted a little again, by now!

Greetings to you,

As you might have gathered, this song was dedicated to a Certain Princeling who thinks that his problems will be cured by a sea voyage. I doubt he will listen.

Nice surprise, indeed!

Though not technically accurate. Miriel managed the trick by lying down, going to Mandos, and stubbornly refusing to come out again. Yet I had to stretch a point for the sake of the rhyme. ;)

Thank you for your comment, and Happy New Year to you!

Wow. That a real new version of the good ol' "Hotel California" - and a interesting one !

This one is very, very good and reflect truly the depressed feelings of this Elf. May I ask how long took you to write this ?

Anyway, though the overall theme of the song is more sad, I must confess that I couldn't help laughing out loudly at the lines "Her mind is Feanor-twisted"... *lol* This phrase is such a funny idea and so fitting - it's
definitely inspiring reading your stuff - I would love to read more of it :)

And I hope you are better by now - I know the "after-holiday-depression" very well from myself - no worries, it will pass and the next holidays will surely come :)

Warm greetings Eva

Mae Govannen!

You may indeed! The idea has been knocking around in my brain for some time, but the song itself took me a day to write, once I had the lyrics to copy inspire me. I'm glad you liked this!

Why thank you! Most of it is quite dark, but I have a feeling you don't mind dark tales. You will find, below, a link to the table of contents of this journal, and you have been friended to access it all.

And now I've access to everything else all your stuff will soon be absorbed like a sponge...(I'm a bookworm, it cannot be helped....;))

I've just friended you back - so if you like, you can also read my stuff and have a look at my artwork though it's not so much yet :)

Hey Randy,

haven't heard something from you for quite a while by now and I wanted to ask if everything is alright over there at your place....

I keep remembering this twisted version of "Hotel California" here - I would so *love* to hear a recorded version of it....=)

Well, I was about to say yes, but I might have spoken too soon.

Since I write darkfics primarily, my output is not large. However, I recently wrote a Pirates of the Caribbean fic, which I posted at ff.net under the pen name Thranduil Oropherion Redux, along with two of the LOTR fics you will find here. Perhaps I should post that one here as well.

Cheers, and thank you for thinking of me! :)
