A Story of One Winter Solstice in Immanion
Read Chapter 4 below. (If you missed previous posts, see: Prologue; Chapter 1; Chapter 2; Chapter 3.
A Wraeththu fanfic; everything belongs to Storm Constantine and Immanion Press.

Summary: There is not a lot of forward-moving action in this chapter. Pell’s a flirt; Swift’s insecure. (You were warned about this story—that it is shameless self-indulgence, I mean!)

Chapter 4 - Expectations Read on. )

I'm still trying to get all of the reviews written that I had intended to write. I passed my self-determined quota some time ago (I was modest this time because of all the computer problems I was having). But I still haven't covered all the stories I intend to review. Got a couple of big ones done last night, but still need to go over the list again and make some hard choices--I'd need another month and a lot of will to finish every last one.

I started off thanking each reviewer individually almost as soon as I noticed a new review had been posted. Then I was offline for a while, got distracted, didn't check often to see how my stories were doing, and now I am behind with "thank yous." I do intend to thank everyone, even if my responses continue for a while past the voting deadline.

It is always interesting for me to note which of my nominated stories/articles receive the most reviews. They are not always the ones that I like best. Funny thing that! (I have to admit I am not always laughing when I am running against myself. Hey, I am the first to admit also that there are times when I take this recognition thing far too seriously! I think that's human nature and I am always a little skeptical when people tell me that it truly doesn't matter to them. Not at all? Seriously?)

Anyway, thank you so much, everyone, for all the wonderful reviews.

I finished Dairy Queen by Catherine Murdock. It's a well-written YA novel about a Wisconsin farm girl whose family doesn't talk much. Anyone who's ever lived in the midwest should recognize the phenomenon.

Then I set up my Kindle and looked for a book to try out. I settled on Lois McMaster Bujold's Borders of Infinity, a novella that I haven't been able to get hold of. It's sold packaged as a single volume with two books I already own and I couldn't bring myself to buy the whole volume. The library apparently can't bring themselves to buy it either. Kindle had it for $2.39, which seemed like a deal. So I'm reading that. The only thing that bothers me so far is having to advance to the next page so often. In a physical book, you have two pages open in front of you and there's more on each page. I do like the way the Kindle laid flat on the table at Panera this morning.

Happy Birthday [info]surgicalsteel

What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how
infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and
admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like
a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals— etc., etc.
—The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (Act II, Scene ii, 285-300)

I know I am a little crazy, but this citation has always makes me think of the physical side of man when I hear it. Cannot help but contemplate the human body and those, like you and Serindë, who understand it so much better than I do.

"A man paints with his brains not his hands." - Michelangelo (1475-1564) That's nice. A surgeon, however, needs both!

Happy birthday! Have a great day. It’s been terrific to get to know you better this year.

I'm home. I'm crabby but I'm home. We lost the keys to the rental car at our son's house. (You recall we're driving a rental because another driver ran into Mr daw in a previous snow storm a couple of weeks ago) As best we can figure, Mr daw (thank god not me) dropped the keys on the driveway, which had a bunch of snow on it. Then it snowed some more. Then our son and DIL cleared the driveway using both a shovel and their new snow blower. Then we realized the keys were missing. We searched the snow including with a rake and didn't find them. This was on Saturday. We phoned the rental car company and they said we could get a new key from a dealer but the dealer wouldn't be open until today. So we wound up staying longer than we anticipated.

Yes, I know. I really need to do the last two cards for the advent calendar challenge. I'll get to them, I promise! But Gilraen (from In The House of Elrond) has been pushing very hard to get at least the chapter I finished today done. It was a biggie, with lots of character growth/change.

Anyway, I thought I'd start today's posting with the next chapter of Foundlings. Enjoy.

Chapter 1

Part Two: Lending a Hand

Arwen walked, lost in thought and paying no heed to her steps. The initial flurry of activity had ceased since Frodo arrived near death. But the hobbit improved, and now she wondered when his guide would arrive. Was Aragorn alright? Had he been injured? She could not help but worry about her beloved as the not knowing ate at her heart.

"Oh!" She stumbled back a step as something bumped into her and soft cloths tumbled to the floor.

"Oh, my apologies, my lady!" Ivornel, one of the chambermaids, gasped as her eyes met Arwen's. "Please, forgive me! I did not see you!"

Arwen smiled kindly as the servant set the basket she had been carrying on the floor. Ivornel scrambled with one hand to pick up the few towels that had fallen when they collided.

"It is all right, Ivornel. I was not paying attention to my own steps." She paused, noting the chambermaid's awkward fumbling due to a smaller basket slung over the maid's other arm. "Is Thalawest working you too hard, Ivornel? You are carrying far more than usual. Has he become so hard a taskmaster?"

Ivornel looked up, struggling to regain her feet with both baskets. "He is kind as always, my lady. But there is so much going on. New guests arrived today! There is simply too much to do. Oh!" She lost her hold on the basket and it thumped back to the floor, the newly retrieved towels tumbling out again. "Perhaps it is a bit much."

Arwen held back a laugh at the other's comical look of dismay. "It is indeed. Mayhap I can give you a hand with it? Where are the towels to be delivered?"

"Oh no, my lady! It would not be proper!" Ivornel cried out as she stooped to collect the fallen cloths.

"Nonsense! I am not above doing a bit of work. It is not as if carrying a few towels will even cause me to break into a sweat." She knelt and picked up the last towel, refolding it and placing it back in the basket along with the others Ivornel had folded. "Now, you just tell me where to deliver them, and then you can get on with your other chores."

"Thank you, my lady," the maid replied with a sigh of relief. "They are to go to the east bathing chamber. Gaeras is opening that room up for some of the guests, and he would like it stocked and ready should they wish to bathe. The towels just need to be set on the shelf." She curtsied. "I appreciate your help, my lady. It is a great relief!"

"It is nothing," Arwen assured her. "Now, be off with you! I can handle carrying a basket of towels to the East Wing." And so saying, she lifted the wicker and set it against her hip. Turning around, she made her way to the eastern side of the Last Homely House with a smile on her lips.

She entered the bathing room and was surprised to see a lantern lit the room, then her eyes fell to the occupied tub in the center of the room. Her eyes widened, then her smile tilted into to a rather wicked smirk. She would enjoy this encounter, that was for certain.

To Be Continued….

Thank you for reading! Please don't forget to review!

A Story of One Winter Solstice in Immanion
--NO UPDATE today or Saturday (tomorrow, my house is hosting in the seemingly endless cycle of family Christmas/Hanukkah gatherings and I am doing most of the cooking). Then I hope to pick them up again and post all of the remaining chapters between now and New Year’s Day.

A Wraeththu fanfic; everything belongs to Storm Constantine and Immanion Press.

(See: Prologue; Chapter 1; Chapter 2; Chapter 3).

Wow! Thanks so much to everyone. I really did write and post this for myself. I’ve been suffering from preoccupation with other things: moving, distraction, computer troubles and general writers block and this was my blowing-off-steam story (Beta-less and without any serious preoccupation for its literary merit—just pure fanfic for the hell of it). You people have really lifted my spirits by responding to this story.

You guys have been great this year! Patient and supportive. Love all of you.

It tried to freeze here last night - hubby says that it almost made it. I know my poinsettias are starting to droop a bit, darn it. Still, we may actually have green hills for the holidays! Around here, that's something to celebrate.
